Back in the day the apron was woren in a functional sense while doing field or house work, to protect the dress from dirt. If the girl has tied the apron to the left then that means they are single. If the apron is tied to the right then they are married. If it is in the middle then it shows that they are a virgin. Widows or waitresses tie the apron at the back.
